Inside–out change, rippling into compassionate communities
Share A Smile Foundation India began in 2010 as a small Facebook group created by young people who believed in the power of empathy to change lives. In 2012, it became a registered not-for-profit under the trust Act, and launched its first youth leadership journeys, nurturing young people as leaders of care and responsibility. During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, the Foundation gave birth to Karunatine, a statewide movement of reflection, grief, and collective love that has since evolved into a platform for building compassionate cities. In 2023, Jaipur launched its Compassion Charter, becoming India’s third city to join the Global Compassionate Cities Network, co-created with 22 organizations and 35 citizens. Today, Share A Smile continues to expand across Rajasthan and tDelhi/NCR, carrying forward a vision where compassion becomes culture, and small acts ripple into lasting civic transformation.
We envision a world where compassion is not viewed as charity but lived as culture. Our aspiration is for young people to grow as heart-led leaders, for public spaces to nurture belonging, and for communities to practice care as naturally as they breathe. In this vision, every act of kindness becomes part of a ripple that transforms how we live together.
Our approach is rooted in Pause, Reflect, Act. We slow down to listen and feel deeply, create spaces for dialogue and learning, and then step forward together to turn reflection into collective action. This gentle yet radical process ensures change grows like ripples—youth-led, intergenerational, and sustained by solidarity.
Our impact is reflected in over 500,000 lives touched through youth leadership, storytelling, and civic action. From transforming neglected parks into safe public spaces to leading Jaipur into the Global Compassionate Cities Network, our work demonstrates how small acts of empathy can ripple outward into lasting civic and cultural change.
Change begins with simple gestures. The Kindness Network mobilizes volunteers and citizens to practice small acts of care in public life — from helping transform a neighborhood park to standing in solidarity with marginalized groups. These acts may seem small, but when multiplied, they create a visible culture of empathy that reshapes how people relate to one another.
We see young people not just as beneficiaries, but as changemakers. Through immersive leadership journeys, mentorship, and hands-on experiences, we nurture youth to lead with empathy as their compass. These journeys allow them to explore pressing social issues, build emotional resilience, and step into leadership roles where compassion guides their decisions and actions.
Communities thrive when people have the language and courage to talk about what they feel. Feel, Share, Heal creates safe spaces and tools for schools, NGOs, and communities to build emotional literacy. Through storytelling, reflection, and creative expression, participants learn to acknowledge grief, celebrate joy, and hold space for one another’s healing.
Compassionate Cities are built when citizens themselves name what hurts and imagine what can heal. Through this pathway, communities come together with institutions and local governments to identify the issues they face and co-create solutions they can own. From neglected parks to questions of safety and inclusion, people lead the process of transforming their shared spaces. The Jaipur Compassion Charter is one such example, where citizens, organizations, and leaders collectively designed a living promise of empathy for the city. This pathway ensures that compassion is not delivered from above but grows from within — as shared ownership, civic pride, and everyday practice.
The Dream Bus is a one-day experiential trip that connects urban and semi-urban youth with inspiring change stories from rural India. Through music, games, storytelling, and dialogue, young people experience life beyond their own neighborhoods, meet grassroots changemakers, and return with fresh perspectives. What begins as a journey on a bus often becomes the spark for a lifetime of empathy-driven leadership.
Samvaad is a platform where young people engage in open, reflective conversations about the issues that shape their lives — from mental health and gender to entrepreneurship and belonging. Blending dialogue with creative expression, field visits, and story circles, Samvaad creates safe spaces where youth can share honestly, build understanding, and imagine new possibilities together.
Compassionate Action Days bring people together to reimagine and reclaim shared public spaces. From parks once marked by fear to corners that lacked ownership, communities identify their challenges and co-create solutions. Whether painting, planting, or redesigning, these days are about practicing empathy as shared responsibility. Each Action Day turns “someone’s problem” into “our collective space of belonging.”
Born in the stillness of the pandemic, Karunatine began as an invitation to hold space for grief, love, and reflection. Today, it has grown into a statewide movement for compassionate cities, bringing citizens, artists, youth, and institutions together to co-create Compassion Charters. In 2023, Karunatine helped Jaipur launch India’s first city Compassion Charter, joining the Global Compassionate Cities Network. Karunatine reminds us that compassion is not charity — it is culture, and together we can design cities that reflect it.

Share A Smile became my turning point. It gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone, discover my voice, and grow as a leader. More than anything, it taught me that compassion creates safe spaces — for children, for communities, and for ourselves. When I look back, I see how the trust placed in me, the support I received, and the children I worked with helped me break barriers I once thought I could never cross. What began as hesitation slowly transformed into confidence, and what began as a role turned into a journey of belonging. This is the essence of Share A Smile — a place where young people find their voice, where communities reclaim their spaces, and where compassion becomes a living practice. And this is why we invite you to walk with us. Join the movement to make compassion our culture. Every act of care, no matter how small, shapes a safer and more humane world. Step in as a Compassion Catalyst, stand with us as a Compassion Ally, or co-create change as a Compassion Partner — together, we can turn empathy into everyday practice.
Your generosity keeps compassion alive and growing. As a Compassion Ally, you sustain this movement through financial support, in-kind contributions, or resources. Every gift — big or small — becomes a ripple of empathy that reaches far beyond what you see.
Step into small acts that create big ripples. As a Compassion Catalyst, you bring your time, skills, and energy to nurture spaces of care — from leading action days to supporting youth journeys. Every step you take sparks belonging in someone’s life.
Change is strongest when it’s built together. As a Compassion Co-Creator, your school, workplace, or organization helps design and own initiatives that embed compassion into public life. Together, we transform shared spaces, institutions, and cities into places of belonging.
